(tequila) is a video filmed in the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, during the 2016 election cycle. It follows an American citizen approaching the hotel bar and ordering shots of Mexican tequila. Filmed with a hidden camera, the video immerses the spectator in the anticipation of a crucial moment of action. And yet, the scene we witness – the consumption of liquor imported from Mexico – is entirely banal. The illegal filming of the scene may be viewed as a metaphor for the rhetoric of the Republican candidate, fixated on clandestine immigration. At the intersection of absurd activist gesture and performance, (tequila) plays on fears and a central hypocrisy in the United States.
